“Today, Baba’s fragility is more evident than ever. In February, Cyclone Winston — the strongest storm to make landfall in the South Pacific basin in recorded history — obliterated the majority of the settlement’s homes. In 2014, a 1,000-square-foot “high-performance center” was built to replace an adjacent 400-square-foot corrugated-tin shack that previously served as Weightlifting Fiji’s gym. Winston destroyed the center, but the gym — minus its roof — survived. Since then, Vaivai and a handful of other lifters have been living and training there, beneath a new roof built from the wreckage of the center’s walls.”
